Can Standing Water Cause Mold?
Standing water and elevated moisture create conditions that allow mold to grow on damp materials.
Why mold becomes a concern
Mold needs moisture and an organic surface. Drywall, wood, and carpet backing all qualify. Once materials stay wet for around 24–48 hours, mold growth becomes more likely.
Reducing risk
- Remove standing water quickly
- Dry materials with air movers and dehumidifiers
- Monitor moisture until materials reach safe levels
- Remove materials that cannot be dried in time
